Directors

STEPHANIE HANKEY - Executive DIRECTOR & co-founder

Stephanie has worked to strengthen information activism and reduce limits to freedom and expression online since 1998. Stephanie previously worked with the the Open Society Institute establishing their Technology Support for Civil Society Program, before co-founding Tactical Tech in 2003 and Tactical Studios in 2011.

Stephanie has a background in information design, was editor-in-chief of Pulp magazine and worked as a creative director and producer for a number of London-based multimedia companies. She has a Masters in Information and Interaction Design from the Royal College of Art London, and a certificate in Campaigning and Lobbying from NCVO. Stephanie is currently developing Tactical Tech's work on influence and visual persuasion and leading its new initiative on data shadows and political engagement.

Caroline Jane Kent - Deputy Director

Caroline has over 14 years of experience in campaigning, political advocacy and communications around social justice and women's rights. Before joining Tactical Tech as Deputy Director, Caroline was part of the executive team of DSW  - an international Foundation working on sexual and reproductive health and rights.

Caroline studied Social Sciences in Hannover, Germany and holds a Masters degree in European Studies from the London School of Economics and Political Science. In her spare time, she tries her hand at knitting, yoga and cooking.

Marek Tuszynski – Creative director & co-founder

Co-founder of Tactical Tech, Marek is a restless producer of various creative and social interventions that span across various media: radio, television and internet; as well as those that utilise non technical formats, such as workshops, book sprints and endless conversations. Activism, innovation and creativity are the major driving forces in his work, as much as the importance of marginalised voices, opinions and world views.

Previously he co-founded The Second Hand Bank, as well as the International Contemporary Art Network, before Tactical Tech and recently Tactical Studios. He is currently focusing on producing interactive and static visualisations representing complex social and political issues; very recently he produced and directed a series of documentary films for Tactical Tech called Exposing the Invisible. In some spare time he produces a radio program titled Love & Chaos on Reboot FM.

Privacy and Expression

Maria Xynou - Programme researcher

Maria works on privacy-related projects at Tactical Tech as a researcher. Previously, she worked in India with the Centre for Internet and Society (CIS), as a policy researcher on surveillance.  Maria has interned with Privacy International and with the Parliament of Greece, and holds a MSc in Security Studies from the University College London (UCL).

DANIEL SOBLIYE Ó CLUNAIGH - PROGRAMME COORDINATOR

Before joining Tactical Tech, Daniel worked on security and protection of human rights defenders through research and advocacy at an international level as well as grass roots observation, protective accompaniment and training. At Tactical Tech, he carries out research, writing and editing of digital security materials, as well as regularly facilitating digital security workshops. In particular, he is focusing on the development of 'holistic' approaches to digital security which are consistent with human rights defenders personal, organsational and emotional well-being. He also works closely with particular communities at risk such as women's rights advocates and LGBTI communities in order to develop context-specific digital security guides. Outside of work, he tries to make time for music, yoga, tweeting and blogging.

Hannah Smith - Project operations coordinator

After moving to Berlin in 2011, Hannah started out coordinating conferences centred around globalization, good governance and international cooperation. She went on to spend a year at a young start-up, before joining Tactical Tech in 2013. Her role has evolved from programme support to include grant management, training and event coordination, project operations and outreach.

Hannah has a degree in International Politics from the University of Aberystwyth and is interested in ideas around human rights, citizenship and statelessness. In her spare time she likes cycling around the city and discovering the many peculiarities of the German language.

Spyros Monastiriotis - programme coordinator

Spyros joined Tactical Tech in July 2014 to work on outreach, community engagement and research in a number of areas, including  Visualising Information for Advocacy, the Security in-a-box Community guides, and LGBTI communities.

He has interned with Amnesty International in Greece and the Political Affairs department of the EU Delegation in New Delhi. He co-founded Colour Youth, the LGBTQ Youth Society of Athens, in 2010 and was on its management committee from 2011-2012. Spyros holds a BA in Political Science from the University of Athens and a Masters in International Public Management from SciencesPo Paris.

Becky Kazansky - Lead Programme Researcher

At Tactical Tech, Becky conducts applied research on digital security and information management strategies for human rights. In addition to her research, she also conducts trainings and workshops on privacy and digital security. Becky holds a Masters Degree in Human Computer Interaction from ITP -- the Interactive Telecommunications Program, at NYU, and a bachelors degree in political science. Before joining Tactical Tech, Becky researched Internet Policy for the Ford Foundation's Freedom of Expression Unit, designed games and systems of play aimed at encouraging civic participation for Area/ Code and UNICEF, and reported on networked politics and privacy issues for organizations such as Personal Democracy Media and the Berkman Center.

BOBBY SORIANO - Programme Advisor.

Bobby has 15 years of systems and network administration experience. He has worked with numerous NGOs implementing information and computer related projects. He is also an information and communications technology trainer. His recent work includes computer and online trainings for conferences and organisations in Asia, Africa and some countries in Europe. He is also involved in projects on the use of mobile technologies for advocacy.

HADI AL KHATIB - PROGRAMME COORDINATOR

Hadi Al Khatib has been working on the security and protection of human rights defenders with Tactical Tech since 2010, and has been
facilitating digital security workshops in the MENA region as well as writing and editing digital security materials in Arabic.
.
Outside of Tactical Tech, he produced a radio program with Nasaem Syria Radio to raise awareness on issues related to the security of Syrian journalists and human rights activists. He also recently worked as a project leader in Gaziantep with No Peace Without Justice, supporting Syrian civil society organisations in documenting human rights violations. From 2006 to 2010 he worked in the protection field with various international organisations in the Middle East, including Medicins Sans Frontieres and the Danish Refugee Council.

Fieke Jansen - Project lead, Politics of Data

At Tactical Tech, Fieke researches and writes on the Politics of Data and digital shadows. She hopes to bring more transparency to the global data industry. Prior to moving to Berlin, Fieke worked on the intersection of the internet, social change and security, working at Hivos to set up and manage their digital emergency programme for human rights defenders and activists. She also co-authored a book called Digital AlterNatives.

Fieke holds a Masters degree in International Communication and an Advanced Masters in International Development Cooperation. She is interested in understanding the new spaces, grey areas and changing dynamics that technologies bring to the world.

Chris Walker - programme advisor

Over the past eight years, Chris has advised on a number of projects at the intersection of technology and human rights, principally in countries where access to information is heavily constrained, closely monitored or both. This experience builds upon a strong technical foundation in computer and network security as well as an academic grounding in legal, political, economic and activist approaches to related challenges.

Andrea Figari - Director of Community Engagement

Andrea joined Tactical Tech in September 2014, and is responsible for Tactical Tech's direct community engagement. She has over 25 years of experience in the not-for-profit sector, starting her career with Greenpeace - initially as a campaigner, later as political advisor on international environmental issues and then as Executive Director of the Argentina national office. Andrea moved to Berlin in 2003 to join Transparency International, where she worked as Global Programme Manager in the Campaigns team.

Andrea holds a degree in Political Science and International Relations from the Catholic University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, with post graduate studies at Harvard University’s Hauser Center for Non Profit Organisations and the Fletcher School at Tuft's University. She's also a photographer, and since 2006 has organised the Berlin Fotomarathon.

Evidence and Action

Alex Haché - project coordinator

At Tactical Tech, Alex coordinates the project "Securing Online and Offline Freedoms for Women: Expression, Privacy and Digital Inclusion." She is a sociologist and a researcher on ICT for the public good, and holds a PhD in social economy. For the last decade, she has been involved in the development of technological sovereignty initiatives for social and political transformation within neighbourhood communities, engaged research networks, social movements, immigrant teenagers and women's groups.

LISA GUTERMUTH – PROGRAMME COORDINATOR

Lisa is working with the Evidence and Action Programme conducting research and adapting materials for different groups.  Currently this is with the Women’s Rights Campaigning: Info-Activism Toolkit.  She has previously focused on land grabbing, crowd mapping, and e-waste for different projects at Tactical Tech and with affiliated organisations.  Offline you can find her gardening, reading books with tangible pages, or baking bread.  She is currently finishing her masters in Agricultural Economics at Humboldt-Universitaet zu Berlin and is involved in urban gardening projects around the city.

Jacopo Ottaviani - programme researcher

Jacopo Ottaviani has a background in data journalism, information design and cross-border project management. He creates visualisations and narratives around data, and his work has been published in The Guardian, Al Jazeera International and Foreign Policy. At Tactical Tech, his focus is on the use of information design and data for advocacy, and on developing interactive data-driven projects. In his spare time he reads books by epic travellers, draws maps and looks for new material for his future book of short stories.

MAYA INDIRA GANESH - PROGRAMME DIRECTOR

After leading Tactical Tech's 'Evidence &Action' programme for the past three years, Maya has now transitioned into a new role as Director of Applied Research. Our current research projects examine digital security pedagogies and practices, and the flip sides of applications of technology for transparency and accountability.Maya's role also includes 'field building', to convey Tactical Tech's work with its peers and partners within the information-advocacy sector. Before joining Tactical Tech, Maya worked as a researcher and activist with women's rights organisations in India and internationally. Maya holds Masters degrees in Applied Psychology from Delhi University, India, and in Media and Cultural Studies from the University of Sussex, UK.

 

TOM LONGLEY - programme associate

Tom Longley is a human rights and technology consultant, and an Associate at Tactical Tech. After graduating in law in 1999, Tom started working for the International Crisis Group on a field investigations of crimes against humanity during the war in Kosovo. After this, he worked in Sierra Leone with No Peace Without Justice, reconstructing the pattern of crimes committed during the decade-long war. He became interested in how data and technologies enable this work, and has since worked for investigation organisations in Bangladesh, Cambodia, Zimbabwe and others, building up their ability to use data and technologies safely and effectively. His current clients include Global Witness, mySociety and the Open Society Foundations. Tom recently co-authored Tactical Tech's book Visualising Information for Advocacy.

 

 

Jeff Deutch - programme researcher

Jeff works as an applied researcher on projects relating to social exclusion. In addition to working with Tactical Tech, he is a co-founder of Artists Without A Cause. Previously, Jeff worked as a core-organizer with Milk Not Jails, a legal observer for the National Lawyers Guild, and a staff member at the Rosenberg Fund for Children. He has also interned at the Center for Constitutional Rights and the Center for Alternative Sentencing and Employment Services. Jeff holds a Master of Public Policy from the Hertie School of Governance (Berlin) and a BA in Critical Social Inquiry from Hampshire College (Amherst, MA).

Mathilde Landgrebe - Project Operations Coordinator

Mathilde is Franco-British and based at the Tactical Tech Berlin office. Using print, multimedia or film, Mathilde's aim is to publish information effectively : to communicate, research and raise awareness on matters that need to be heard. Mathilde has directed and filmed a feature documentary on the Land Rights of an indigenous tribe in the Philippines, been a reporter for Arte and has worked on various documentary film productions for channels such as Discovery Channel, Sundance Channel and History Channel UK. Raised and educated in London, she has a Geography and Politics degree from La Sorbonne, Paris, and a Masters in Media Production, Promotion and Management.

Ling Luther - Project operations coordinator

Ling joined Tactical Tech at the beginning of 2014 to work on outreach for the Exposing the Invisible project. Currently, she works across many of Tactical Tech's projects, organising events, doing outreach work and helping to ensure smooth-running operations. Before joining Tactical Tech, Ling worked in Berlin and London organising workshops, festivals, trainings, campaigns and conferences in fields such as environmental rights and justice, green economy, renewable energy and nuclear disarmament. She studied environmental science at the University of East Anglia and the University of Oregon. During her time off you'll find her outside on a bicycle, looking for the next adventure.

GABI SOBLIYE Ó CLUNAIGH - SENIOR PROGRAMME COORDINATOR

Prior to joining the team, Gabi worked at Transparency International, contributing to data projects such as the Global Corruption Barometer, and for The Guardian in London. Gabi holds a Masters in Human Rights from University College London. At Tactical Tech, Gabi works on Exposing the Invisible. Before joining this project she has worked on various other projects within Tactical Tech including, Visualising Information for Advocacy, the Women's Rights Campaigning Toolkit, and working with the Egyptian organisation EIPR to create a data visualisation on Egyptian Building Collapses

She has an interest in data and design, which, outside of Tactical Tech, she applies to the creation of braided hair wreath displays.

Technology, Production and Communication

HELEN KILBEY - COMMUNICATIONS COORDINATOR

Helen got involved with Tactical Tech in 2012 as a writer and editor, joining the Berlin office in 2014. She has worked on a number of Tactical Tech projects, and writes the monthly newsletter In the Loop. Her background is in journalism, publishing and teaching, and she is a former editor at online news portal allAfrica.com. She has a degree in Journalism and Media Studies, as well as a postgraduate degree in Philosophy. 

Alistair Alexander - Director of Publishing and Production

Alistair is Director of Publishing and Production at Tactical Tech, as well as an activist - both on and offline - with grassroots climate, economic justice and human rights groups.

Laurent Delleré - Web Developer

Laurent moved to Berlin in 2000. After studying comparative literature he got a degree in International Media and Computing at the FHTW Berlin. He has over 6 years of experience as a web architect and project manager in various companies and is currently working as a freelancer. Laurents portfolio include a wide range of websites for the Unesco in Vienna, the Free and Humboldt universities in Berlin, the Heinrich-Böll Stiftung, the Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin and many other big and small web projects.

DAVID TIMOTHY - PRODUCTION COORDINATOR.

David has worked for over 10 years with various NGOs in India, worked in the area of conflict resolution and has always been involved with the print media in every organisation he has worked with. He was part of the marketing, design and production team of the largest Children's book publishing house in India, that worked at reaching the printed media to the remotest parts of the country and inculcate in the Indian Children the habit and love of reading, before he came on to be part of Tactical Tech. 

KAUSTUBH SRIKANTH - HEAD OF TECHNOLOGY

Kaustubh is a technologist currently based between Bangalore and Berlin. An active open-source software practitioner, he has over 10 years of experience working with community-driven web content management and social platforms. He has a special interest in low cost, sustainable, open radio networks and founded Infinity Radio (later known as RadioVeRVe), India's first internet radio station promoting Indian independent music. Kaustubh also has many years of experience working with deployment of open-source, secure, distributed internet infrastructures.

At Tactical Tech, he mentors a small team of developers, advises project and program teams on technical solutions and is also responible for provisioning, maintenance and security of all of Tactical Tech's online infrastructure.

ALLAN STANLEY - HEAD OF PRODUCTION

is an information designer and production guru. He was also a long-standing member of the Bangalore-based technology NGO, Mahiti. At Mahiti, he headed up the design function, specialising in information architecture and the usability of web-based and multimedia applications. Over the last 10 years he has managed numerous technology projects for NGOs, and conceptualised projects such as a series of digital pedagogic games and tools to teach soft skills and literacy to young adults in rural India. Allan was a lead organiser for AsiaSource and AfricaSource 2 and led the local production team for the World Information City exhibition (India).

Rafael Polo - Software Architect & Developer

Rafael Polo is a computer scientist and software developer. Before joining Tactical Tech, he worked for more than a decade in several organisations, on projects that ranged from open-source platforms like WebdocGraffiti, to the extraction and visualisation of all
non-structured public Brazilian Cultural funding data at Mostre!me.

At Tactical Tech he aims to engage public awareness and social collaboration, building systems and tools. While not playing with algorithms like WikiBot, Steganos or Rastros, he likes to watch documentaries and bike around Berlin's many parks and lakes.

Tactical Studios

LUCINDA LINEHAN - PRODUCTION MANAGER

Prior to joining Tactical Tech in 2009, Lucinda built a freelance career producing visuals for large scale events as well as co-managing an international dance company. She has over 20 years experience in print, multimedia and event production, working with well known global brands and public bodies. She has managed Tactical Tech's client-based creative agency, Tactical Studios, since its inception in 2010, working with partners and clients on a broad range of issues and across a variety of formats. She has also been involved in many of Tactical Tech's NGO projects - including, currently, the Think Tanks Visualisation Project. She holds a BA Cantab in English and a postgraduate degree from London University.

Operations and Administration

JOHANNA (HANNELIE) COETZEE - DIRECTOR OF FINANCE AND RESOURCES

Hannelie has worked in Financial Management for not-for-profit organisations since 1999. She started her career in finance at the Namibian offices of the United Nations Children Fund and served the local UN office in different financial and administration capacities for five and a half years. After completing her Masters in Public Management at the University of Potsdam, she broadened her horizon beyond the financial aspect of development work. For one and a half years, she acted as a Programme Manager for Positive Vibes, a NGO working with and for people affected by HIV in Namibia. She also has done several consultancies in finance and human resources matters with NGOs and small for-profit organisations.  

POORNIMA RAMAKRISHNA - OPERATIONS MANAGER, BANGALORE

Poornima is an operations expert with over 10 years of experience in finance, administration, logistics, HR, project management, legal and company affairs within non-profit organisations. She was, for almost a decade, a valuable member of the core Mahiti team.  She has a Masters in Sociology and is presently working towards an MBA and a certification as Company Secretary

DANIELA O'HALLORAN - Finance & Administration Coordinator

Daniela O'Halloran joins the Tactical Tech team with over ten years experience working in finance and administration for civil society organisations and in the private sector. In Ireland, she started and ran the social enterprise, Ireland Donates, which aimed at linking together NGOs and private organisations. She has a Degree in Sociology from the London School of Economics, and since returning to Berlin she has started a Masters Degree in Social Management from the Alice Salomon University of Applied Sciences Berlin in cooperation with the Partaetische Akademie Berlin.

JAN GRIFFITHS - FINANCE MANAGER

Jan has been with Tactical Tech since its inception in 2003, and has always been pleased to be part of the successful forward trajectory of the organisation. She is currently Tactical Tech's treasurer, and mentor to other members of staff.  She joined Tactical Tech after many years in the corporate sector, co-founding and assisting in the running of many successful businesses. She has a BA (Hons) Degree in Business Administration and a Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management from Manchester Metropolitan University.
