Me and My Shadow has been shortlisted by The Daily Beast for their BEASTBEST Awards and has been described as a place to make a 'good start for eluding the NSA'.

It 'lets you figure out what sort of data footprint is left by your devices and internet access points so you can see how your digital habits affect your privacy.'

This award recognises the most relevant, entertaining, original and, (in some cases), overlooked websites on the internet.

The surveillance program PRISM by the US secret service NSA has reminded us that all of our activities online may be monitored without giving us the chance to understand whether we really are targeted or what the purpose of this monitoring is. Information is being collected about us all but we have little understanding about how it is being used.

We do though have some means of learning what information we are giving away and this can allow us to make conscious decisions about how we want to continue to use the internet. Some traces are difficult to avoid, but there are also many things we can do to reduce our digital shadows.

Facebook has some 1.1 billion active users. Some 200 million accounts are active at Twitter. Millions more shop at Amazon and other online retailers. But few have actually read the long passages of legalese before clicking "I agree" and typing in an address, e-mail, telephone number or credit card details.

Me and My Shadow, a project run by the Tactical Technology Collective, keeps track of exactly what information people leave behind when they sign up for online services, surf the Internet, shop online and send text messages on mobile phones. The project won Deutsche Welle's 2013 The Bobs award for the best in online activism in the Most Creative and Original category

We're delighted to announce that our website Me and My Shadow has been awarded a prestigious international online activism award for the most creative and original website.

False Privacy Notice

In November Facebook published a decision that users will no longer have the opportunity to vote on proposed changes. Along with this decision some changes regarding the Data Use Policy were announced.

HTTPS by default

There's some good news: In November Facebook announced that it started implementing HTTPS encryption by default. HTTPS protects the communication between you and the Facebook servers.
