FROM THE TECH TEAM: SETTING UP AN ENCRYPTED MAIL SERVER

In the wake of the NSA revelations, our tech team has been busy changing the way our internal email works - automatically encrypting any email that is stored on our servers with PGP encryption. Even if an unencrypted email is sent to us, it is encrypted and stored as soon as it is delivered to our server - only decryptable by the person the email was sent to. Even if the server is seized or otherwise compromised, the actual data on it will be illegible, protecting both us and our email host. This is accomplished by the server storing all of our public keys to encrypt the emails, so that not even the sysadmin can read them.

After we've done some extensive testing and security auditing, we'll release documentation and instructions to help others set this up themselves.

Building on our Security in-a-box toolkit for human rights defenders , Tactical Tech has produced a toolkit specifically for the LGBT community from Arabic-speaking countries. The guide helps to contextualise digital security threats for LGBT persons and human rights defenders in the region, and offers tools and tactics that can be used to overcome these threats.

In March 2013 Tactical Tech met with five organisations in Beirut to brainstorm ways in which our range of info-activism resources could be adapted for use by activists in the Arab region. The project resulted in a suite of new, locally contextualised self-learning materials in Arabic on digital activism, campaigning and working with data and evidence in advocacy. https://www.tacticaltech.org/info-activism-resources-localised-and-arab-world

One of our partners, Dawlaty, created the first Arabic publication of its kind that compiled and categorised 51 case-studies of info-activism in Syria.
