A First Look at Syrian Info Activism

You've probably forgotten by now that Syria is famous for ping pong. So what better way to motivate protestors under tight military control than to write encouraging slogans of peace on thousands of ping pong balls and release them to bounce down the streets of Damascus. This is just one of the tactics showcased in Dawlaty's Arabic booklet - Tactics used in the Syrian Revolution Movement. This is the first Arabic publication of its kind that complies and categorises info-activism in Syria.

Info-activism resources localised for and in the Arab world

In March 2013 Tactical Tech met with five organisations in Beirut to brainstorm ways in which our range of info-activism resources could be adapted for use by activists in the Arab region. Our partners on this project were Dawlaty, SMEX, and Alt City all based in Lebanon, 7iber in Jordan and the Development House in Yemen.

The morning tracks were two-hour long daily sessions on four inter-related approaches to working with information for advocacy: Investigation, Documentation, Curation and Intervention. They laid down the building blocks for working with evidence for influence, giving advice on strategy, sharing participant experiences and developing new approaches together. Each participants chose to attend one track throughout the week.
